About Chi Kung

Chi Kung or Qigong, is an ancient Chinese form of movement exercise, which promotes self-healing through the healthy flow of chi or vital life force energy around the body. Literally translated, Chi Kung means ‘energy cultivation work’ and is an accessible form of exercise for young and old, able and less able. Chi Kung ‘forms’ can be adapted to your individual needs, making this a versatile and prescriptive way to work healthfully with yourself.

Historically Chi Kung was practiced in Taoist and Buddhist monasteries as a foundation for martial arts and mediation training and continues to support these trainings, particularly T’ai Chi. Most of the theory behind Chi Kung is common to Traditional Chinese Medicine and is commonly associated with Taoist and Buddhist philosophies and practices.

Chi Kung forms are not as complex as T’ai Chi and for some of us this is a relief! This gives you time to really ‘get’ what is going on as the movements are repeated until you no longer need to think about what you are doing. The feeling of the Chi guides you, and the movements become effortless. What emerges is a moving meditation, where your mind drops down a gear into an alpha rhythm of aware relaxation where self-healing takes place. This encourages a meditative state where stillness can become a potent resource. There are a number of still or focusing postures which encourage the Chi to gather into the reservoirs or dantien.

Some Chi Kung movements take their inspiration from observing how animals move with purpose, yet with minimum effort, often with a graceful flow. Other movements encourage Chi along energy channels or meridians or around  organs or specific areas of the body, with the overall aim to increase Chi flow throughout the mind, body and aura/energy fields.  All Chi Kung requires a strong foundation from the Earth helped by shaking tension out, opening and mobilising the joints, lengthening the muscles and tendons. There is a cumulative effect to this work that promotes self-healing and a natural clear flow of vitality and creativity, with immediate benefits being of stress-relief,  joint mobility and deep restful sleep.

Other important aspects are:

    * Breathing exercises
    * Relaxation
    * Special walking methods
    * Healing sounds
    * Meditation and visualisation techniques

Chi Kung keeps us connected to the earth for support and our spiritual natures for guidance. It gradually builds up the body’s vital Chi energy to establish a true harmony with a balanced, peaceful, calm, tension-free body and sparkling clear mind.

All students are encouraged to develop at their own pace.

Chi Kung complements many other healing modalities.
